DB Export Gold
DB Export Gold is one of New Zealand's most historically significant beers — its story beginning in 1958 when Morton Coutts founded DB Export Beer as a response to Arnold Nordmeyer's Black Budget — the austere New Zealand government budget of 1958 that raised taxes on beer and cigarettes. The original DB Export Beer was a full-bodied, easy-drinking 5.35% lager so good it won the title of Best Beer in the World in 1968. In 1960 Morton Coutts discovered the Holy Grail of brewing — continuous fermentation — a process that unlike batch-brewing meant once brewing started the beer literally never stopped flowing. The process was adopted by breweries worldwide. In 1987 the Export range was restructured: Export Dry launched and the original DB Export was renamed Export Gold at 4% ABV. A golden lager characterised by a pleasant, slightly fruity flavour with a clean, crisp finish. Export Gold won a Gold Medal at the 2014 Monde Selection awards. Heineken became the ultimate parent of DB Breweries through the APB acquisition in 2012.
