Gemer

Beer Description

Gemer is a pale lager from the Gemer region of southern Slovakia, named after the historic Gemer territory whose brewing tradition dates back to a documented municipal brewery in Rimavská Sobota in 1692. The modern Pivovar Gemer was founded in 1965 as part of a state decision to build a brewery, sugar factory and malthouse in the city. Following the fall of communism, the brewery was privatised and changed hands several times in 1999 before Heineken acquired it the same year, gaining a majority stakeholding in one of Slovakia's regional breweries. Production continued in Rimavská Sobota until October 2006 when Heineken consolidated all Slovak brewing at its Hurbanovo facility — a move that caused considerable local upset. The Gemer brand was briefly revived as a draught-only beer before declining demand led Heineken Slovakia to discontinue it entirely around 2014, replacing it with Kelt and Corgon in hospitality venues.
