Java Donker

Java Donker was the dark lager variant of the Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerij range in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies — described in Dutch brewing records as a type of Münchener, bringing the Central European dark lager tradition to the tropical setting of Java. Introduced shortly after the brewery's opening in November 1931 as an expansion of the initial Java Bier range, it offered a malt-forward, darker alternative to the flagship pale lager. The brewery at Ngagel in Surabaya was technically innovative — using the Nathan closed brewing method and later expanded with a proper lager cellar under Heineken's influence after 1935, which would have significantly improved the quality of the Donker's conditioning. In 1937 the Java range was discontinued as the brewery was renamed and the product line unified under the Heineken brand identity.
