Monteith’s Original Ale

Monteith's Original Ale is the foundational beer of the Monteith's Brewing Company — the beer that effectively saved the Monteith's name. By 1990 it was one of the only surviving brands from the Westland Brewing Company, the amalgamation of five West Coast breweries including Monteith's Phoenix Brewery that had merged in 1927. To recognise the Monteith family legacy to New Zealand brewing, Westland Brewing Company was renamed Monteith's Brewing Company in 1990 and the Original Ale became its cornerstone. Described as a classic West Coast ale — full-flavoured, amber-coloured and sessionable — the Original Ale embodies the straightforward, no-nonsense brewing tradition of New Zealand's rugged South Island West Coast. A beer for the working people of Greymouth and the surrounding goldmining communities that first built the brewery's reputation. Monteith's is owned by DB Breweries, a wholly owned subsidiary of Heineken since 2012.
