Servatius Maastrichtsch Gerste

Servatius Maastrichtsch Gerste (Maastricht Barley Beer) was a Gerstebier (barley beer / simple lager) brewed at Sint Servatius Brouwerij (formerly De Zwarte Ruiter) in Maastricht. Gerstebier was a cheaper, lower-grade lager style common in Dutch and Belgian brewing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — a more economical everyday beer than pilsener, typically lower in alcohol and produced with simpler recipes. The Sint Servatius Brouwerij was acquired by Heineken in 1920 and continued brewing regional styles including this Gerste until closure in 1954.
