Servatius Oud Maastrichtsch

Servatius Oud Maastrichtsch (Old Maastricht) was a traditional dark lager brewed at Sint Servatius Brouwerij (formerly De Zwarte Ruiter) in Maastricht — one of the classic regional Dutch beer styles of Limburg. 'Oud' (old) beers were a distinct Dutch style — darker, often sweeter, traditionally top-fermented or mixed fermentation lagers that predated the pilsener era. The Sint Servatius Brouwerij was acquired by Heineken in 1920 and continued brewing Maastricht's traditional styles including this Oud Maastrichtsch alongside the newer pilsener production. Brewing ceased when the buildings were sold in 1954. The Dutch Oxford Companion to Beer specifically cites Sint Servatius as an example of the post-war brewery closures that created 'a pilsner monoculture in the Netherlands'.
