SE Falkenberg — Bryggeri AB Falken is a brewery in Falkenberg, SE — Sweden.
Bryggeri AB Falken was founded in 1896 in the coastal town of Falkenberg, chosen by its German-trained founder for the quality of its water from the river Ätran. The brewery grew steadily through the 20th century, launching its Falcon brand in 1955 and benefiting enormously from the 1965 introduction of the mellanöl category — medium-strength beer that could be sold in Swedish supermarkets.
In April 1971, Falken began contract brewing Heineken Lager for the Swedish market, first in cans and subsequently in bottles — confirmed in Heineken’s 1971 annual report. A Heineken brewer was stationed at Falkenberg to oversee production. The arrangement made commercial sense: Falken had the capacity, the distribution reach, and access to the rapidly growing supermarket beer market that the mellanöl category had opened up.
That market closed abruptly in July 1977 when the Swedish government abolished the mellanöl category, removing all beer above 3.5% ABV from supermarket shelves. Heineken at 5% ABV was now restricted to Systembolaget — a dramatically smaller sales channel. The contract brewing arrangement ended. Falken itself was bought by Pripps the same year. The brewery eventually passed to Carlsberg and still operates in Falkenberg today as one of Sweden’s largest production facilities.
