Tanzania has never been a Heineken brewery market. The dominant brewer is Tanzania Breweries Limited — founded in 1933 as Tanganyika Breweries, renamed after the political union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964 — which is firmly in the AB InBev family via SABMiller's 1993 joint venture. Serengeti Breweries, the second-largest, is East African Breweries/Diageo. There is no space in Tanzania's brewing industry for a Heineken production site.
What Tanzania has is a growing import market. By 2002, Heineken's internal publications described it as moving towards "building market" status — an established presence with growth potential. In March 2012, Heineken announced it would open a dedicated office in Tanzania to push its brands, working through local distributor Mabibo Beer, Wines and Spirits Ltd — who had already held the Heineken franchise for 17 years by that point, placing the distributor relationship back to around 1995. HEINEKEN Tanzania Limited is now a registered entity in Dar es Salaam, Oysterbay, operating as part of Heineken Beverages Holdings — the same structure that covers Uganda, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
No brewery. No local brand. Just the green bottle making its way through a market that Tanzania Breweries and Serengeti have dominated for decades, finding its audience in Dar es Salaam's hotels, upmarket bars and modern retail.
