You wonder if it is possible to do? Yes sir, it is! Its not easy, but it is possible, just follow the next steps, and you are on your way…. 🙂 Ofcourse this is ONLY to make a backup of the original disc you bought!!
Drive: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D flashed with default Pioneer 1.29 firmware
Media: Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x
Software: Alcohol 120%
Write speed: 4x
Write method: DVD DAO
View -> Options -> Recording -> Book Type DVD+R/DVD+RW disc as DVD-ROM while burning
View -> Options -> Recording -> Buffer set to 90Mb
Pretty essential is the drive…List of drives that should be usable:
Pioneer 111D
Pioneer 112D
Pioneer 215D

Optiarc AD-5170S
Memorex DVD+R DL 8x disk
ImageBurn speed set at 2.4x, couldn’t set book type but I saw DVD-ROM shown on device section.

Converted the image to Nero format (.nrg) with UltraISO. Using Nero 9, burned the image to a Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x, same as used in the first attempt. Now, the booktype was correctly set to DVD-ROM, and the maps are now working flawlessly. By the way, with both Alcohol 120% and Nero 9, the burn speed was set to 2.4x.

managed to make a working copy on a single layer DVD! Previously had a Pioneer 116D and flashed it to 116L with 1.09 firmware. The 1.09 firmware was modified with MCSE (be careful that this could brick your dvd writer) to accept bitsetting, rpc-1 (region free) and lower writing speed (2.4x).
I used a Verbatim DVD+R with Alcohol 120% and 2.4x with success.
