Expanding Capacity for a Growing Market

By the mid-1950s, beer consumption in the Netherlands was rising steadily. The combined effect of post-war recovery, renewed advertising, and expanding export activity placed increasing pressure on existing production facilities.

The board decided to build a new brewery in ’s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch).

The choice of location reflected both logistical considerations and long-term strategic planning. A modern facility would allow for higher output, improved efficiency, and room for further expansion.

On 20 December 1956, the first pile was driven into the ground — a ceremonial moment marking the start of construction. The event was attended by local officials and company leadership.

The project was ambitious. The new brewery was designed with large-scale fermentation capacity, modern bottling lines, and extensive storage facilities. It represented a new generation of industrial brewing in the Netherlands.

Opening of the Den Bosch Brewery

By September 1958, the brewery was ready for its grand opening.

The Den Bosch facility significantly increased domestic production capacity. It enabled Heineken to meet rising national demand while supporting export growth. The site was built for scale and future expansion — a reflection of the confidence of the period

.

The opening marked a shift from recovery to sustained industrial growth.

Where the late 1940s had focused on rebuilding, the late 1950s focused on expansion.

Den Bosch became one of the pillars of Heineken’s Dutch production network and symbolized the company’s transition into a modern, volume-driven brewing era.
