Willem Baartz

Co-Initiator of Heineken’s Industrial Expansion

In the early 1870s, Heineken entered a phase of rapid expansion that required more than vision alone. The transition from a local Amsterdam brewery to a multi-location industrial enterprise demanded capital, structure, and carefully coordinated partnerships.

Within this context, Willem Baartz played a supporting but significant role. As part of the financial and organisational framework surrounding the formation of Heineken’s Bierbrouwerij Maatschappij in 1873, he contributed to the conditions that made expansion into Rotterdam possible.

This expansion was not achieved in isolation. Alongside Gerard Adriaan Heineken and Baartz, members of the Hoyer family (Invested 30.000 guilders)—owners of the Oranjeboom Brewery—also played a role in supporting the venture. Their involvement reflects a broader moment of collaboration within the brewing industry, where competition gave way to partnership in pursuit of industrial grow

“He didn’t run the brewery — but without him, the brewery wouldn’t have scaled.”
