Versche Bier (Fresh Beer)

Beer Description

"Versche Bier" (Fresh Beer) refers to the traditional Dutch top-fermented ales produced at the De Hooiberg (The Haystack) brewery during the first years of Gerard Adriaan Heineken’s ownership. Before the "Bavarian" lager revolution, this was the staple brew served in Amsterdam’s local taverns

This is the "Genesis" beer of the collection. It represents the moment Gerard realized that while the Amsterdam working class loved their "Versche Bier," the international future belonged to the clear, stable lagers of Germany. By January 1873, the board officially decided to stop producing "Hollandsch bier" entirely.

Most Versche Bier was delivered in wooden barrels (kegs) to local Amsterdam taverns like Die Port van Cleve. These were heavy oak casks, often branded with a simple "De Hooiberg" stamp or a haystack icon
